Daal Fry

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Masoor or Moong dal (washed)
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 chopped tomatoes
  • 2-3 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 inch ginger (grated)
  • 2 green chilies (chopped)
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • Pinch of nutmeg (jaifal) and mace (javitri) – optional but flavorful
  • Fresh coriander for garnish
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Boil the dal with salt and turmeric until soft. Mash slightly and set aside.
  2. In a pan, heat oil/ghee. Add cumin seeds, then add chopped onions and sauté until golden.
  3. Add garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Fry for 1 minute.
  4. Add tomatoes, red chili powder, and cook till tomatoes soften.
  5. Add boiled dal into the pan. Mix well and cook for 5–7 minutes on low heat.
  6. Add garam masala, a pinch of jaifal and javitri for a unique aroma.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with rice or chapati.
